The history of the monorail dates back to the early 19th century, with experimental versions appearing in various forms, such as "gyroscopically balanced" monorails and suspended systems. However, it was not until the 20th century that the concept gained traction as a practical form of urban transit. One of the earliest successful commercial monorails was the Wuppertal Schwebebahn in Germany, which opened in 1901 and is still in operation today. Monorails gained international attention at world fairs and theme parks, notably Disneyland's monorail in 1959, which showcased the technology as the "transportation of the future." Over the decades, monorails have been implemented in various cities around the world, from Tokyo to Las Vegas, primarily serving as airport links, urban transit systems, or tourist attractions. The appeal of monorails lies in their relatively low footprint, reduced noise, and capability to navigate tight turns and steep grades. Despite their benefits, they have not replaced more traditional rail systems but serve as a specialized solution in certain transit situations.
